Salão Jardim da Trindade: Um Cinema Palimpsesto (1912-2017)

Resumo
O objeto em estudo nesta dissertação é o Salão Jardim da Trindade, atualmente conhecido como Cinema Trindade, localizado perto do centro da cidade do Porto entre a Rua do Almada, Rua Dr. Ricardo Jorge e Praça da Trindade. A história deste Salão, nascido como Cinematógrafo da Trindade em 1912, prolongou-se no século XX até ao seu encerramento no ano 2000. Com a sua reabertura em fevereiro de 2017 nasce uma natural curiosidade acerca deste edifício. Como tal, aliada à escassez de estudos que se debruçassem sobre este Cinema, cresceu a necessidade de uma investigação que fizesse a reflexão da sua implantação na história urbana e arquitetónica do Porto, assim como na história do cinema local e nacional. Será apresentada, nesse sentido, uma análise evolutiva do Cinema Trindade desde as suas pré-existências, anteriores ao primeiro projeto de 1912, passando pelas grandes campanhas de obras: em 1930, para a inclusão do cinema sonoro; em 1956, para modernizar o aspeto do edifício; e em 1989/1990, para a divisão da grande sala de cinema, em duas salas-estúdio e bingo, numa tentativa de evitar o encerramento do edifício. Para que este trabalho fosse possível foram utilizadas diversas fontes, nomeadamente, licenças de obra, fotografias, imprensa periódica local e de cinema e demais recursos bibliográficos. Este material foi recolhido ora em linha, ora presencialmente, no Arquivo Privado do Arquiteto Agostinho Ricca, nos Arquivos Públicos Municipais do Porto – Arquivo Histórico da Casa do Infante e Arquivo Geral do Gabinete do Munícipe –, nas Bibliotecas Públicas Municipais do Porto, e nas Bibliotecas das Faculdades de Letras e Arquitetura da Universidade do Porto.
Abstract
The object under study in this dissertation is Salão Jardim da Trindade, nowadays known as Cinema Trindade, located near Porto’s city center between the Street of Almada, Street of Dr. Ricardo Jorge and Praça da Trindade. The history of this Salão, born as Cinematógrafo da Trindade in 1912, continued in the twentieth century until its closing in the year 2000. With its reopening in February 2017 arises a natural curiosity about this building. As such, along with the shortage of studies that dealt with this Cinema, grew the need for an investigation that reflected the implantation of the urban and architectural history of Porto, as well as the history of local and national cinema. In this sense, an evolutionary analysis of the Cinema Trindade will be presented from its pre-existences, previous to the first project of 1912, through its great campaigns of construction: in 1930, with the inclusion of sound cinema; in 1956, to modernize the appearance of the building; and in 1989/1990, with the division of the grand cinema room, in two studio rooms and one bingo, in an attempt to avoid the closure of the building. In order to make this work possible, several sources were used, namely, work permits, photographs, local newspapers and cinema press and other bibliographic resources. This material was collected either online or in person, in the Private Archives of the Agostinho Ricca Architect, in the Municipal Public Archives of Porto – Historical Archives of Casa do Infante and the General Archives of the Gabinete do Munícipe –, in the Municipal Public Libraries of Porto, and in the Libraries of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and the Faculty of Architecture of University of Porto.
